5 Bank Street (New York City): The apartment Cather shared with Edith Lewis beginning in 1912, located in Greenwich Village in the Manhattan borough of New York City. Subway construction forced Cather and Lewis to relocate in 1927.
Person Annotations
Bridges, Robert (1858-1941). American magazine editor. Robert
Bridges was born in Pennsylvania and attended Princeton University, where he
became a lifelong friend of future president Woodrow Wilson. In 1887 Bridges
became associate editor of the new Scribner’s
Magazine; in 1914 he became editor and in 1930 retired but
continued to serve as literary advisor. Scribner’s
published Cather’s poem “A Likeness” in the December 1913 issue, but when
she submitted another unnamed poem to Bridges in 1914 he rejected it. Cather
apparently had occasional personal contact with Bridges, as a 1926 letter
expresses regret for not responding in person.
