NUMBER FIVE BANK STREET3 Dear Mr. Mencken1:

Frankly, I don't know how to answer you4 about the Nordica5 aspect of that story6. The last husband, George Young7, is living, I think. The only point of verisimilitude as regards him is the will contest. The whole story would suggest Nordica to anyone who knew her, yet there is no incident in the story which resembles anything in her life except the shipwreck and the will contest.—And, of course, the main idea suggests Nordica, though one might point to several other singers who worked hard and supported as many husban men in a strictly honorable manner.

I wish you would let me know when you are in town2. I shall be away more or less this week, but we might chance to be here on the same day. I've had my telephone taken out, as I did not expect to be in town so late as this, but a note would reach me.

Sincerely Willa S. Cather

P.S.

Everything brought out in the contest over Nordica's will was so much stronger than anything here, that I don't see how George Young could object.
