NUMBER FIVE BANK STREET3 Dear Fanny Butcher1:

I've delayed writing to you because of certain anxieties here2, and now I must tell you that all your nice plans for me are off. I will not be able to stop in Chicago4 at all. I am taking5 my mother6 on to the Mayo Clinic at Rochester7 for a serious operation. She had one done this last April8, and a return looks discouraging. We have had a perfectly wonderful month9, however, and in this world I suppose we have to take the good seasons with a light heart and meet the dark ones with calmness. Anyhow, a Happy New Year to you, dear Fanny and my love.

Yours Willa Cather
