NUMBER FIVE BANK STREET3 Dear Mrs. Stanfield1:

Many cordial notes have come to me about my last book4, but very few have given me as much pleasure as your wold word of appreciation. It is a delight to me that the stories gave you pleasure. You are one of the very, very few people who always waken the “story” side of me. I think I once told you the plot of a story on which I was working—and I almost never make confidences of that kind—it was an unique instance for me!

With deep affection Willa Cather
