The generous Christmas box got here in perfect condition, on Saturday morning. Last
night we4 had one of the puddings for dinner,
with a brandy sauce made with brandy of Josephine’s5 own manufacture, and it was delicious.! Josephine highly approves of my presents this year, because so many of
them were useful. Mother6 sent a lot of aprons
and towels and nice things for the kitchen. But the climax of our Josephine’s
astonishment was reached when, on Monday, two pounds of unsalted butter arrived by
post from Bess7 and Auntie8, as fresh and sweet as possible. She smelled
it and tasted it fiercely, and declared she was glad to find there was some p place in this huge country where they knew enough
not to ruin their butter with salt. I had to let her take some of it home to her old
father9, and she thinks better of my
family than before.
A Merry Christmas season to you all, and I send a kiss to lovely Betty Jane10.
With love always WillieMy publisher11 sent me two beautiful bottles of Venetian glass, for salad oil and vinegar. Josephine says, “Oh, yes, they are very fine for rich people, but I will always be afraid of breaking them, and I had much rather he sent us a new aluminum saucepan for omelettes, as the old one sticks now.”
