NUMBER FIVE BANK STREET3 My Dear Mr. Maurice1;

I do want to review Dorothy Canfield4’s next book, but not this one5. It is too soon after her review6 of my own book7; It’s that sort of mutual back-scratching that makes reviews of one author by another so generally valueless. Mrs. Fisher reviewed my book for a special reason, because she was in France8 for the four latter years of the war. If I should follow immediately with an article on her own book,- - - well, it would look too much like an arrangement altogether too usual.

I'll gladly agree to review her next book for you,

Very sincerely yours Willa Sibert Cather
