NUMBER FIVE BANK STREET3 My dear Miss Birtwell1:

My thanks to you, and to Mr. Knothe4 also, for the invitation you sent me. I was, as you thought probable, unable to accept it. These are very crowded days and nights for me. I am leaving for the West in about ten days and shall not return for some months. I expect to be in New York 2during the month of February, however, and will probably be at home Friday afternoons during that month. If you happen to be in town on some Friday in February, I would be glad to have you come in. I never begin to see people on Fridays until after Christmas, but this year it will be even later than usual.

With best wishes, believe me, Faithfully yours, Willa Cather

Miss Lewis5 joins me in the heartiest good wishes to you, and I thank you for your letter about the new book6. I've long meant to answer it, but -- there are only 24 hours in a day, alas!
