passage written by Cather on separate enclosure. | written text |
I can't furnish you with anything very interesting in the way of ancestors. My
four
grandparents3 were born and bred in the Valley of Virginia4. All four of my father5's grandparents6 were born
in the same place7. My
One8 of my mother9's grandmothers10 was an
English woman, and one of her grandfathers11
was a German from Alsace12. My father's
people on both sides came from Ireland13,
very far back, but they were here before the Revolution.
Yes, I am sure "Paul's Case"14 would be the best story to use15. After I left the hospital I went to Lakehurst16, but neither the mild air nor the aged women who people the place could do much for me. I am hoping to sail on the 24th, two weeks from now, if I can get through all the preliminary chores. I shall go straight to Paris17 and will probably see the Knopfs18 there. My publishing relations with them have turned out very happily. I like them so much personally,—they have so much zip and go. I am sorry not to have a glimpse of you before I leave, but I've decided to declare the winter a failure in so far as I am concerned, and abandon it. Maybe you'll be in Paris the summer?
Faithfully yours Willa Cather
