I tried to get you on Sunday and on Labor Day. On Tuesday I "flew de coop"—escaped to this old place3 in the woods where they are always very nice to me. And Zoë, I'm going to send you a book7 which has interested me a lot. I don't usually like books about houses of prostitution, or comparisons of English and French manners, and this book is The Shattuck Inn

made of those two things; but I like it. The man8 really has something to say. It's called "Face Value." Please read it carefully—it's good, somehow. I don't know why.

Send me a line, and any interesting reviews of the "Archbishop" you may see. We get no New York9 papers here and I neglected to write to a clipping agency, with all the million things I had to do.
