Your letter has caught me on a long journey3 and I write to thank you for it. I don't see how anyone can really get much out of that book4 who doesn't know the country5. What a country it is! I'm on the way to it now.

Cather had traveled to Red Cloud, NE, in early December to visit her family. She planned to travel to Arizona, but changed her plans when her father became ill.
Person Annotations
Biddle, Francis Beverley (1886-1968). American lawyer and judge.
During a long and distinguished career, the Harvard-educated Biddle
practiced law in Philadelphia, PA, served as a judge on the Court of Appeals
for the Federal Circuit in Washington, DC, was Attorney General of the
United States during World War II, and served as the primary American judge
during the post-war Nuremberg trials. When he wrote Willa Cather in 1928, he
was still practicing law in Philadelphia.
