passage written by Cather on separate enclosure. | written text |
I did not write you on my arrival simply because I was too unstrung. My mother3's condition is so piteous. The little sounds she makes for speech break my heart, and she has to be fed with a spoon, like a baby. The worst of it is that all her personality, her mind and strong will, are there intact behind the wrecked machinery. Anyhow, it's a comfort both to her and me that I am here2 at last.
The Breakers FRED B. DUNN, PRESIDENTI am staying at this hotel because it is very near her. I telegraphed the office my brother4's address as the surest one at which to reach me, but you can also reach me at this hotel. I am very comfortable here, and my cough has almost disappeared. The place is ugly, but the climate is good. Please give Mr. Lesser5 my brother's address, 130 Linden Avenue, Long Beach.
With my love Willa Cather
