LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA Dear Zoë1,—

I've been here2 two weeks. I haven't written you because I've been too heavy-hearted. You know when one feels down-and-out one somehow shuns the friends one is fond of. And My mother's3 state is very piteous. I'm at this hotel because it's so near the apartment hotel where she is. But I want to see you awfully, Zoë, and I'll go into Los Angeles4 in a few days. I'll telephone you beforehand. The Breakers

LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA Don't, please, betray to anyone the fact that I'm in this part of the world. I know some people in Los Angeles and am in no mood to be a literary personage at present. It will cheer me up a lot to see you, dear Zoë.
