Sigh no more, lady,
Sigh no more!4

If I live through being made a Doctor of Laws5 (and all the drudgery that goes with such 'honors'!) I'll be back in Pasadena6 about ten days from now—but for Sweet Charity's sake don't tell anyone I'm coming back. I was with mother7 only five [illegible] days before I had to make this date, as I'd promised to be here months ago.

Since that promise was made mother has failed terribly, and life is pretty difficult for me just now. That's the only reason you1've not heard from me.
