Dear Sarah Teasdale1;

Your letter has been on my desk a long, long while. I left New York3 a few days after it first reached me, and brought it along with me. My mother4 has been in this sanitarium5 for almost three years, completely paralyzed on her right side, and almost entirely speechless, with her mind perfectly clear. It's STEPHEN SMITH, M.D.

most cruel thing that can happen to anyone. I have been here much of the time, and we manage it so that two of her children6 are always here with her. But in this kind of life I've lost touch with my friends—with myself, indeed. The book I've just finished7 has helped to pull me through the long stretch of hopeless waiting. been such a help and comfort. I can't see as much of her as I'd love to, but it's such a good feeling to know that she's only an hour away. I'm awfully fond of her and being with her always makes me happy.

Mother has a cottage of her own here, in beautiful grounds, but the climate though good for sick people is depressing to well people, and to live so much among STEPHEN SMITH, M.D.

invalids is a hard fate for me. I ran away to France9 last May and had a glorious six months over there, seeing many old friends.10

I wish, Sarah Teasdale, that you would send me the collection of your verse you like best, (all my books have been in storage for three years) the new crop of poets don't at all take your place for me. I don't like analytical verse—I like something to flower in a poem, if it's only four lines. To me that's the only excuse for writing verse at all, to let a feeling flower.

With my admiration, and good wishes to you always.

Willa Cather
