Thank you3, my dear, for your letter. There is nothing to do except to try to get used to the strange feeling of having nobody behind me, and nobody to report to. Helpless as my mother4 was, she expected an account of all one's activities. For her sake I can only be glad that her long illness is over—before that injured part of her brain had begun to dim her real personality, as it must have done in time. The next few months will be hard. I shall probably go to Jaffrey5 about October 1st, but I will let you know the exact date later. I may even go down to Virginia6 instead of to Jaffrey. Meanwhile, I am enjoying every day on this little island2 of wild and ever-changing weather.
With love always Willa Cather
