passage written by Cather on separate enclosure. | written text |
I have just got back to New York2, but your letter and the verses reached me in the country and have been such a comfort to me. They came like the hand of real friendship stretched out. I have read the verses over many times. The first one stays in my memory without the text. That inability to follow, to go any farther with my poor mother3, when I had gone so far, was the thing that hurt most. Just now I feel so non-anchored and purposeless that I scarcely know where to turn. I am glad of the rush of prosaic business that benumbs me. But just as soon as I come to the surface a little, I do want to see you, and shall telephone the Review4 office to arrange when and where.
Yours with love and gratitude Willa Cather 35 Fifth Avenue5
