Dear Mr. Van Vechten1;

On Tuesday I am going, unwillingly, out to Chicago4 to receive a "gold medal"5 from several women. Alfred6 says one can't refuse to take a medal, no matter how little one wants it. I'll be back by the first of November, and then I'll call you up. I have good reason to hate photography, but we might arrange something. Anyhow, I've long wanted to have an operatic talk with you.

Cordially yours Willa Cather
