⬩W⬩S⬩C⬩ My dear Mrs. Roosevelt1:

When I returned from Chicago3 last week4 I found a great many letters awaiting me. Unfortunately your letter was in an envelope which seemed to contain advertising matter, and therefore came to my attention very late. Before I opened it I had already sent an answer to Mr. Penfield5 through my secretary6. I shall be in New Hampshire7 for all of the month of December8 however, and could not have accepted your invitation even if I had opened your letter sooner. I would, however, have answered you promptly, and it is for this negligence that I now apologize. These large envelopes which evidently contain advertising matter very often do not get opened at all, and I found yours only because, after Mr. Penfield telephoned, I looked for it.

Very sincerely yours, Willa Cather
