The news4 won't be out until next week, but Alfred5 has just telephoned me that the Prix Femina (PRIX FEMINA) has been awarded to me for "Shadows"6, and that the French ambassador7 will give a luncheon8 for me in New York2, and that I'll have to go—or take a train for California9! What a life!—when I want so much to give my time to the apartment10. This will mean interviews, letters, telegrams etc. etc. Just at this time it's a real calamity. Meanwhile, it's a secret between you and me and Mr. Wise11 until you see it in the papers.
