⬩W⬩S⬩C⬩ My dear Sigrid Undset1:

I wish you knew how much pleasure the lovely lilies of the valley have given me. It is interesting to know that the Norwegian name for them is so like ours. The German and the French names for that flower seem to me so unlike the flower itself. Your letter, which came yesterday, made me very happy. It is good to feel that we, who have known each other so long, at last know each other in person and find that we have so many loves and beliefs in common, and that the same things give us pleasure.

My personal will-to-live has dropped a good many degrees since you were here2 a week ago. The agreement5 between Hitler6 and Vichy Government takes the heart out of one. Everything turns a little bitter on the tongue, and one wants to escape from oneself. We do not know what the terms of that agreement are, but any such agreement must be evil and all its terms evil. This new German victory leaves one sick at heart.

I hope you can come again for a quiet evening with Miss Lewis7 and me. It is good to get away from crowds and arguments, and I am very happy that you found it restful and sympathetic here.

With all the old admiration, and with my love which is both old and new,

Yours Willa Cather (left hand)8
