I'm sorry this letter is hard to read. My hand4 happens to be stiff today
⬩W⬩S⬩C⬩ Christmas Eve Dear Sigrid Undset1;The dear flowers you sent me brightened a day already happy. I have not felt
such excitement about this festival of Christmas since I was a child. For
Santa Claus has come! Did he come by air, or water, or by reindeer? No
manner of arrival is so wonderful as his being here. I can't help feeling
that the small, fox-like 2reservations and favorit favouritisms that lurks behind our
political corners, and in the blind alley ways, will shrink away before
those shrewd and searching eyes. There is such a thing as shame, after all,
and some of those very little men who have been favored for petty personal
reasons will just now want to seem better than they are. If he were
"high-brow" they could wink and laugh him off: 3but
Churchill5 isn't high-brow. He's
their
kind—only honest and so much "smarter" in the
American sense. That he is very intelligent would mean nothing at all to our
politicians. But that he is smart, "yankee smart"—that gets them. He's not
his mother6's son for nothing. He
honors the American idiom. no He can "sass"
back at them back (dialect for 'be saucy')
and rather enjoy it. So will they!
I set out to wish you a happy Christmas, dear Lady, I didn't mean to explode like this.
