passage written by Cather on separate enclosure. | written text |
It was good to hear from you again, and I was glad to have your word of sympathy3 as to the difficulties of recovering from an illness in a high temperature. I think Mrs. Street4 had a worse fate than I, if she had to worry through the results of an operation in Tucson5. I have been there when it was very hot (though always in winter), but 108° is beyond my experience.
I am not going to be able to go to the Berkshires6, as all the hotels there have been closed because of the falling-off in motor traffic. I have arranged to be at Williams Inn, in Williamstown7, until the end of November. A college town is a dangerous place for a writer to seek repose, but as I am going up with an old friend8 and register under the name of Winifred Carter, I think I shall be quite safe.
Cordially yours, Willa Cather
