The lovely narcissus you sent me at Christmas time seemed to promise that spring will come. Do you know Schubert4's lovely song "Dream of Spring in Winter"5?
This was a strange Holiday time for Miss
Lewis6 and me; my
secretary7 has been ill for some weeks, and our excellent
house keeper8 and cook upon whom
we depended so much has been ill and 2unable to
come to s us since October first. We have
been fending for ourselves, with the aid of a faithful cleaning woman and a
house man who give us three days a week and keep our place9 fairly clean. I don't really mind
washing dishes, but it keeps one from doing other things. I have not quite
got my normal strength yet, but I have gained five pounds and I can enjoy
food again, whereas for four long months I was a little hungry all the time,
and yet detested every form of nourishment. But there ills are all over now:
I recount them only as an explanation of my singularly secluded life for
these past months. The New Year will do better things for us all, please
God.
