passage written by Cather on separate enclosure. | written text |
There simply never were such roses! I had almost forgotten what a heavenly perfume roses have. And never, never at a florists does one ever a stalk with roses, (mature flowers) and lovely buds on the same stem. Nearly all the roses are perfect today,—so are the snapdragons. The flags (iris) were the only ones that went limp, and two of those survived. They look like Roman helmets, don't they?
I don't know when anything has pleased me so much as that lovely box of flowers, my dear.
I was sorry I could not see Mr. Cole3, but I was just getting in to bed when he telephoned. I had been out to a foolish tea and was so tired that I went to bed soon after dinner. I was so delighted with the flowers that I fell "peped up" again, and I arranged them all in many vases before I went to sleep. They've been a constant joy to me ever since.
Hastily but gratefully Willa
