MARSEILLE Gare Saint-Charles, le October 24 192 My Dearest Mother1:

We3 have reached Marseille2 safely and sail for home Oct 25, will reach New York4 November 12th. I had a fairly comfortable journey down from Paris5, because French people are so kind and courteous, and do all they can to help anyone who is hurt. The only rude persons we met were Americans—they crowd in ahead of anyone who is lame6.

We had a lot of business to attend to here, about passports and steamer tickets, and I have to go everywhere in a carriage, though I can walk about in the hotel. Of course travelling with a lame foot costs about as much as paying the way of a third person. I have been lucky in finding and excellent masseur here, and have my foot rubbed twice a day. I will not have to walk much on the boat of course, though we stop three days at Naples7 and it will be a bother to be lame there—indeed, I find it very difficult to be lame anywhere, but I shall never forget how kind French people have been everywhere. MARSEILLE Gare Saint-Charles, le _ 192 insisted on doing everything for me. Even the cab-drivers, the toughest class of men in any country, always jump down from the box and help me from the carriage. The only people who do not go out of their way to assist one are the travelling Americans. I always knew the French were courteous, but I never before knew how much trouble they would take for a stranger. I can never forget it.

It has been two months since I have heard a word from home, but I hope you are all well, and you in particular, dear mother. Edith's3 mother8 sent me a splendid notice9 about my new book10 from the New York Times11.

Very lovingly Willa
