Your drawing arrived this morning, and while we like it we do not find it as satisfactory as the others. I send it back to you by express this morning, hoping that you can make a few changes init for us. In the first place I very much wish that you could have Mademoiselle DeKoch4 appear without a hat. I have been among singers a good deal, and never knew one to wear a hat to a concert. It seems to me if you could just have a wrap thrown over the back of the chair and have her hair done high that it would be a very great improvement. Some way she and Buchanan do not seem to look just as they did the last time. If you could put him in a dress coat and have him look a little more like he did last month, I think it would improve the picture. The tenor is thoroughly satisfactory, but if you will notice he seems to have a good deal more animation and intelligence in his face than either Buchanan or Mademoiselle, whereas he was supposed to be rather a silent partner.
Now we must have the picture by the 18th. If you willnot have time to make the changes or do not feel as though you can do so, please send it back to us at once as it is and we will try to use it.
It has occurred to me that perhaps you may not have kept a sketch of the former drawing you made of Buchanan and Mademoiselle, so I take the liberty of sending back the scene of three figures, hoping that you can make Buchanan especially more nearly resemble his own self. Please send both of these pictures back to us, as we like to keep the original sketches from which illustrations are made.
Yours sincerely, Willa Cather. THE HOME MONTHLY.P. S.
I think the tenor is just about right, but Buchanan and Miss
DeKoch should be "keyed up" a little higher, more animated etc. And dont you think Miss deKoch's gown is rather flimsy. She had such a decided
air and style in the first picture tha last
month that it perhaps makes one expect too much of her this. I hope you wont think we are chronic pickers, we were delighted THE HOME MONTHLY.
