passage written by Cather on separate enclosure. | written text |
I was ever so proud and pleased that Virginia5 graduated cum laude, and pleased that the students gave me a warm welcome6. I thought the Cathers came off very well on that day. I was truly glad to have a short visit with Dr.7 & Mrs. Nielson8 after the President's reception was over. Years ago I found her the more vivid and interesting of the two, though I admired him, too. Now, twenty years later, I had the same experience all over again. She is the more interesting. But no one so direct and impulsive as she could make a living for a family!
I reached this island2 a week ago, with my
Miss Lewis9. Everything lovely. Our little
house all in order and simply smothered in hollyhocks and larkspur and roses.
Mary Virginia10 arrived yesterday to spend
her vacation here. She really had nowhere else to go,
poor child. Her father11 has not helped her out
for a long while, and goodness knows if he ever will again. I do wish your Virginia
was here too, for weh we have awfully good times.
The weather is glorious and the whole island so sweet and flowery. Virginia Auld is
a good companion, as your Virginia knows. She helps me a lot, and she has a quick
light hand. I'm delighted with all my nieces—I only wish I could see more of
all of them.
Thank you, Meta, for your nice letter. If I hadn't had to be in12 California13 so much I could have seen more of Virginia when she was in this part of the world. I do hope she can get a job, as she wants to do.
With my love to all of you, Willie
