passage written by Cather on separate enclosure. | written text |
We are so sorry to hear about the twins'3 being ill, and we beg West Virginia4 not to catch it. She has had ills enough for one summer! I was hunting matches in the linen closet the other night and found a little cigar box of strange objects. "What on earth are these?" I asked. Mother5 studied them awhile and then said, "Why they are Virginia's fireworks." Safely put away with the matches and soap, a pathetic little collection of roman candles and pin wheels!
Mother and father6 are both ever so much stronger than I—I'm no good this summer. Just now I'm crippled up with neuritis7.
Please tell Elizabeth we are so sorry. And let me know, can Virginia read Kingsley's8 "Greek Heroes"9?
With love to you all Willa
