My Dearest Mother1;

I am sending you a nice letter from Mary Virginia3. I fell so mean and small not to have had here here2, an and I really wanted her very much. But you see her father4 terribly wanted her to go to Red Cloud5, and I was afraid of offending him if I offered an invitation in the oher other direction. Here I was, within a hundred miles, and this island is so much prettier than Nova Scotia6, and I could have saved the child at least half her expenses,besides I would have enjoyed having her. If she had written me that she was coming to Canada7 anyhow, aunt or no aunt, I'd have seen to it that she came here.

Well, she is very plucky and she enjoyed her c vacation anyhow, though I think Nova Scotia a rather dreary and commonplace shore. I wish she could have set on my hill and under my pine!

I expect you are having lovely visits with Elsie8 every day now, and I send you both my dearest love. Have Elsie and Douglass9 seen the splendid review10 in and sketch in the "Atlantic Bookshelf"11," in the front advertising pages. I'd send it, but there are no magazines sold on this island except SAT. EVE. Post12, which is thirty-five cents because of the new duty!

Very lovingly Willie
