⬩W⬩S⬩C⬩ Dear Miss Kirchwey1:

Your invitation to contribute an article to The Nation3 has just come to my attention, as I have been away from New York2 for more than a month. I have just written Mr. Fadiman4 a letter explaining why I do not feel that I can contribute anything to the second volume of LIVING PHILOSOPHIES5, and am enclosing a copy of my letter6 to him. I am sending this explanation (a rather long-winded one) to him and to you chiefly because in the list of contributors to the second volume of LIVING PHILOSOPHIES are the names of people whom I greatly respect and admire. If I were at all clever at expressing my personal feelings about what is going on in the world, I would be very pleased to appear in such distinguished company.

May I take this occasion to congratulate you on your sound editorial success, and on the courage and sanity with which you have stood behind your own beliefs.

Very sincerely yours, Willa Cather
