⬩W⬩S⬩C⬩ Dear Mr. Knopf1:

Your letter3 about "My Mortal Enemy"4 gives me great encouragement. It is an exceptional story; not many people will see that, possibly. But it means a great deal to me that you do. I want to be a "good investment" for you financially, but I want very much more to be able to interest you as a reader. I hope to be able to interest you for many years to come. I value your respect and would like to keep it. I think when you see the Archbishop5 you'll find a new kind of flavor.

I look forward to seeing you and Blanche6 on Tuesday evening.
