Grosvenor Hotel (New York City): When Cather and Edith Lewis lost their 5 Bank Street apartment in 1927, they moved into the Grosvenor Hotel, where they continued to live until 1932. The hotel was located at 35 Fifth Avenue in the Manhattan borough of New York City.
Person Annotations
Aaron, M. Manley. Alfred Knopf’s secretary. As secretary to the president of Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., Willa Cather’s publisher, Manley Aaron was responsible for clerical matters, such as tracking Cather’s address as she traveled or mailing her supplies. However, Alfred Knopf also delegated to Aaron the task of negotiating with magazines for the publication of Cather’s short stories collected in Obscure Destinies (1932), and she took direct responsibility for other matters for Cather and other authors as well.
Howlett, William Joseph (1848-?). American Catholic priest and author. William Howlett taught in Rev. Joseph Machebeuf’s parochial school in Denver, CO, before being ordained as a Catholic priest in 1876. He served as chaplain of the Sisters of Loretto beginning in 1913. Howlett’s Life of the Right Reverend Joseph P. Machebeuf, D.D. (1908) was Cather’s primary source for creating Father Joseph Vaillant in Death Comes for the Archbishop (1927). Howlett’s other books include Historical Tribute to St. Thomas Seminary at Poplar Neck, near Bardstown, KY (1906) and Life of Rev. Charles Nerinckx (1915).
