Individual Annotations
Grosvenor Hotel (New York City): When Cather and Edith Lewis lost their 5 Bank Street apartment in 1927, they moved into the Grosvenor Hotel, where they continued to live until 1932. The hotel was located at 35 Fifth Avenue in the Manhattan borough of New York City.
Person Annotations
Rubin, J. Florence. Staff member, Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. Cather corresponded with Rubin about permissions issues. Rubin also handled some of the miscellaneous personal tasks that the Knopf office undertook for Cather, such as securing tickets to musical performances.
Driscoll, Charles Benedict (1885-1951). American journalist, editor, and author. Born in Wichita, KS, Charles Driscoll graduated from Friends University in 1912 and was a journalist with the Wichita Eagle, Omaha News, St. Paul News, Eagle, and the Cleveland Press. From 1925 to 1938 Driscoll was executive editor of the McNaught Syndicate; Cather refused Driscoll’s 12 January 1932 request for permission to use her name in a McNaught radio talk. Driscoll wrote the column “The World and All,” taking over the popular column “New York Day by Day” in 1938. He also wrote books, including Complete Story of Omaha’s Disastrous Tornado (1913), The Book of Feminine Names and Their Meanings (1932), Driscoll’s Book of Pirates (1934), and The Life of O.O. McIntyre (1938).
