I am so glad to hear that the first article4 is ready. Will you please send it to me at the New York5 office? I go there the day after Christmas and will be in New York for several days. Then I shall go directly to Boston6, where we can consult as to the illustrations. I hope you will be able to arrange the second article7 for us also. Of course it is understood that you can use the letters in a volume after they have appeared in the magazine8.

1180 Murray Hill Avenue (Pittsburgh, PA): Located in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA, now part of the Murray Hill Avenue Historic District, 1180 Murray Hill was the home of Judge Samuel A. McClung and his family. Cather lived there at Isabelle McClung’s invitation from 1901 to 1906. She returned there to visit multiple times until 1915, often writing during these visits.

Nichols, Rose Standish (1872-1960). American garden designer, writer, and activist. Born in Boston, MA, daughter of Arthur Howard Nichols and Elizabeth Homer Nichols, Rose Nichols became interested in garden design; her first project was at her family’s country house at the artists’ colony of Cornish, NH. She was encouraged by her uncle, sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. She travelled extensively in Europe, writing books on English, Italian, and Spanish pleasure gardens, as well as writing many articles for magazines. Nichols was also active in the women’s suffrage and peace movements. Cather met Nichols in Boston, and corresponded with her about a two-part article on the letters of Saint-Gaudens, which appeared in McClure’s in 1908; later Cather had to decline an article on gardens from Nichols.
Nichols, Elizabeth Fisher Homer (1844-1929). Mother of Rose Standish Nichols; sister of Augusta Saint-Gaudens. Born in Roxbury, MA, daughter of Thomas J. Homer (a cousin of artist Winslow Homer) and Mary Elizabeth Fisher Homer, Elizabeth Homer married Arthur Howard Nichols in 1869; they had four children, the eldest of whom was Rose Standish Nichols. Cather would have known Elizabeth Nichols through her acquaintance with Rose Nichols.
1925Nichols, Arthur Howard (1840-1923). American physician; father of Rose Standish Nichols. Born in Boston, MA, son of John Perkins Nichols and Mary Ann Clark Nichols, Arthur Nichols was educated at Harvard, where he also took his medical degree. He married Elizabeth Homer in 1869; they had four children, the eldest of whom was Rose Standish Nichols. He bought a summer house in Cornish, NH, for which Rose Nichols designed her first garden, and an 1804 Charles Bulfinch house on Mt. Vernon Street in Boston, which became a museum after Rose Nichols’ death. Cather probably visited there and knew the elder Nichols socially.
