I wonder if the trustful Denver3
Library would send me "The History of New
Mexico"4 by Horatio Ladd5
(?), published in The Stories of the States series by Lothrop6. Since I came East, I have advertised for
it continuously in New York2 and
Boston7, and have been unable to
get it. I would be awfully grateful if you would let me keep it for a few
weeks. I am dashing off to Chicago8
to give my lecture9 - sweet
diversion.!

At the invitation of Nathaniel Butler, Cather gave one of the William Vaughn Moody lectures at the University of Chicago's Mandel Hall on 17 November 1925.
When Cather first met Guerber in Denver, Guerber volunteered to take Cather sightseeing in her car.

Burroughs, Ella Louise Guerber (1900-1985) (“Louise”). American librarian and curator. Ella Louise Guerber was born in Allentown, PA, and graduated from Cedar Crest College in 1919 and then the library school at Columbia University. At the time she met Cather in 1925, she was a reference librarian at the Denver Public Library and assisted Cather with her research on Death Comes for the Archbishop (1927). In 1926, Guerber moved to New York City to take a position at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and she saw Cather frequently in person. She married Bryson Burroughs, Curator of Paintings, in 1928; he died in 1934. In 1950, when she received an honorary degree from Cedar Crest, she was Associate Curator of Paintings at the Met. After her retirement, she moved to Baltimore, MD, and then Princeton, NJ, where she died. Her friendship with Cather is documented by more than seventy letters from Cather to Burroughs from 1925 through Cather’s late life and by a diary documenting her in-person interactions with Cather from 1925 through 1927.
Ladd, Horatio O. (1839-1932). American clergyman, educator, and author. Born in Maine and educated at Bowdoin and Yale Divinity School, Horatio Ladd moved west when he was appointed principal of the Santa Fe Academy. He subsequently founded the University of New Mexico at Santa Fe and the Ramona Industrial School for Indian Girls of the Southwest. In 1889, he move back east and resumed ministry in the Episcopal Church. Ladd wrote several books about the Southwest, including The Story of New Mexico (1891), which Cather consulted while working on Death Comes for the Archbishop (1927).
