Please reprove the Manufacturing Department for me.
Hitherto proofs3 have always been sent to me here2
by
mail, which is the only right way. This time they were
sent by expers express, valued at five hundred
dollars. There is no express office on this island. Proofs were held up at
Eastport, Maine4, for a week, then sent
to Campo Bello5, just too late to catch our
boat, which touches there only once a week. When they finally reached this island
they were held in bond because of the valuation put on
them, until the inspector came along. Alfred6
had asked me to read them promptly,—and they were two weeks on the way!
If the page proofs are sent by mail, as Commercial Papers, I will get them back into the post again in two days after they arrive here.
The weather here continues to be delightful—just enough rain to keep the flowers blooming and the woods green. I'm glad you are going up to the Gaspé7—I only hope it hasn't become too popular and dusty.
My best love to you W. S. C. RECEIVED
