Individual Annotations
1180 Murray Hill Avenue (Pittsburgh, PA): Located in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA, now part of the Murray Hill Avenue Historic District, 1180 Murray Hill was the home of Judge Samuel A. McClung and his family. Cather lived there at Isabelle McClung’s invitation from 1901 to 1906. She returned there to visit multiple times until 1915, often writing during these visits.
Person Annotations
Teasdale, Sara (1884-1933). American poet. Teasdale was born
in St. Louis, MO, and was a schoolmate there of Cather’s friend Zoë Akins.
Teasdale became part of the circle of writers associated with Harriet
Monroe’s magazine Poetry. She married Ernst Filsinger
in 1914 and the couple moved to New York City in 1916. She was awarded the
Columbia University Poetry Prize (later renamed the Pulitzer Prize) in 1918
for her volume Love Poems (1917). Her final volume of
verse, Strange Victory (1933), appeared posthumously
after she committed suicide.
