Is enclosing two postcards of Breton's The Song of the Lark; prefers the one in brown tones. How does he like the later chapters of the book? Can't revise until she gets a short story done for McClure's and gets her brother sent back to Pittsburgh.   W. S. C.   [Stout #299]

To Ferris GreensletApr. 28, [1915], from New YorkHarvard

Enclosing a first draft of the epilogue. Worried he is not satisfied with the book. Can call off the contract if he wishes. P.S.: If they go ahead she wants three pulls of each galley proof, one of which will go to a musical expert for checking.  Willa Cather   [Stout #300]

To Ferris Greenslet,  Sunday [prob. May 1, 1915] , from New YorkHarvard

Feels reassured by his letter [of Apr. 29]. He was right about the tide in Venice. Wishes he could have been there for the dinner party she gave for Olive Fremstad.   W. S. C.   [Stout #302]

To Ferris Greenslet,  Sunday [June 6, 1915] , from New YorkHarvard

Glad to have eliminated the governorship for Dr. Archie. Has made a suggestion about the jacket to Miss Van Tuyll. Also, has returned thirty-three pages of proof. It's pretty rough.   Willa S. Cather   [Stout #308]

Likes the jacket, but the copy is wrong—Moonstone, Colorado, not Arizona. Also, Thea and Fred go to Mexico, not New Mexico. Wishes it could say something about her artistic growth in the cliff dweller ruins. Actually, not so very happy with the cover. Couldn't it be more like British edition of Pioneers? Henry James seems patronizing in his essay on the Fieldses.   Willa Cather   [Stout #311]

To Ferris Greenslet, Tuesday [prob. July 13, 1915] , from New York Harvard; Harvard

Can't let him use the snapshot of her with Olive Fremstad, but has had some new photos taken. Should capitalize on current interest in cliff dwellings in advertising the book.   Willa Cather   [Stout #312]

To Ferris Greenslet,  Wednesday [prob. July 21, 1915] , from New YorkHarvard

Will send the epilogue next week. There isn't a prologue. Leaving for Pittsburgh tomorrow, so send proofs to 1180 Murray Hill. Leaving for Colorado and New Mexico on August 6. Please send a sample of the new cover before then.   Willa Cather   [Stout #314]

To Ferris Greenslet,  Saturday [prob. July 24, 1915] , from PittsburghHarvard

For three days has been on the verge of sailing for Bergen, then to Germany to interview German leaders. Since S. S. McClure was going, there had to be someone else, so Isabelle was going. All off when Judge McClung decided he didn't want her to take the risk. Will get back onto the page proofs. It was a more appealing project financially than the novel will be. Would have needed to be tactful in order to be accurate without being or at least seeming pro-German.   Willa Cather   [Stout #315]

To Ferris Greenslet,  Monday [pm. July 26, 1915] , from Pittsburgh, postcard ; Harvard

Mailed the epilogue yesterday.   W. S. Cather   [Stout #316]

Will be in Red Cloud for a month starting September 10. Going to Wyoming first. Is Heinemann bringing out the book in England?  P.S.: What is the publication date? W. S. C.  Willa Cather   [Stout #321]
