Found his essay when she returned. Likes the way he presented his opinions of her books. Very fair, though too much emphasis on geographic surroundings. Not true the Southwest is not her own country in the way Nebraska is. On the contrary, knew it well. Please read her comments on Death Comes for the Archbishop. Is very pleased by her letter. Is glad when French people find an authentic note in her two priests [in Death Comes for the Archbishop]. They were modeled on real figures from history whom she studied so closely she felt she knew them. Unfortunately, her student cannot hope to publish a translation of the book into French, as that has already been done and by now has been published. Will have Miss Bloom enclose a copy of the short essay about the writing of the book done for a Catholic publication [ Commonweal ]. Willa Cather [Stout #1366]

Remembers the evening of her and parents' confirmation, which meant so much to them all. Glad to hear Molly Ferris was able to be there for the dedication. He has probably heard about her hand problem. Used it too soon and had a relapse. Please address her by first name, as friends in Red Cloud do. Had a pleasant if not merry Christmas in the hospital. Enjoyed hearing the nurses speak French. Wishes she could have been in Red Cloud for the funeral of Mollie Ferris.
