To Dorothy Canfield Fisher,  Wednesday [Dec. 15, 1926?] , from New YorkUVt

Will write for as long as it takes to smoke a cigarette. Has been busy sending off Christmas presents. Niece Mary Virginia is coming to visit soon, no doubt traveling in something like the style of Queen Marie [of Romania, who traveled from Seattle to New York by train in November 1926 with great publicity]. The queen stopped off in Red Cloud [on Nov. 11], by the way, and was presented a copy of One of Ours. New book [Archbishop] will be serialized starting in January. Writing it gave her a feeling of great happiness.   Willa   [Stout #865]

Spoke at Bryn Mawr on Thursday evening. [Error for Tuesday, January 18? College newspaper printed a report on her talk on January 19.] Enjoyed it, but has subsequently had a lumbago attack. Is in bed today and will probably miss the American Society of Civil Engineering dinner on Wednesday. Was invited by the President of the Great Northern Railroad and has looked forward to meeting men who would be attending.   W. S. C.   [Stout #870]

Appreciated the valentine treat, which helped cheer her up from a period of feeling down, mainly because she can't look forward to another writing project as rewarding as Archbishop. Has been to a Rin Tin Tin movie. Steichen is coming to dinner; will wear her beautiful new dress. Is reading proofs with Edith.   W. S. C.   [Stout #875]

Town is crowded for Holy Week, but they have a room overlooking the water. Wonderful weather. P.S.: She and Edith both like her new bob.  W. S. C.   [Stout #884]

To Mary Virginia Auld, Wednesday [June 8, 1927] UNL , copy, not original

Leaving Sunday for Wyoming. Noise of the subway is a torture. They are emptying the apartment. Suggests she stay at the New Willard when in Washington. Didn't go to Winchester; to get out of attending a banquet there, told people she would be in Wyoming on May 31. Will probably be in Red Cloud in about a month. Can all meet there and dance the Charleston on the new rug. P.S.: Sending address of Howard Gore.  Willa   [Stout #887]

To Mrs. George Whicher,  Tuesday [pm. Nov. 8, 1927] , from Grosvenor Hotel, New YorkPM

Appreciates the invitation to visit, but cannot. Is going to Nebraska soon. Also, Edith Lewis's mother ill. Enjoyed being in Jaffrey during the fall but has not been well lately. Needs to get away from New York. Enjoyed writing Archbishop, but now that it is out there are too many events and letters. Enjoys letters from Catholics, however. Nephew is enjoying Amherst.   Willa Cather   [Stout #910]
